Intensive Couples Therapy, using a variety of evidence-based approaches is an increasingly popular and highly effective way for couples to reconnect, restore, repair and rejuvenate their relationship.

A Couples' Intensive is a personalised 2-Day intensive workshop in the comforts of Amanda's office in South Perth, Western Australia. This workshop is available to couples throughout Australia...and I've even had some fabulous couples fly in from overseas (a true demonstration of their commitment to each other and wanting to create the best possible relationship).  The sessions run from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm each day with a break for a catered lunch.  There is a total of 10 contact hours between the couple and Amanda.

Whilst this can be a taxing emotional process for the couple, the age old adage of ‘no pain no gain’ truly resonates with this style of therapy. Intensive couples therapy sessions are proven to have the benefit of reducing couples distress, resolving specific conflict issues, and increasing a sense of closeness and intimacy, leading to a stronger, more resilient and more satisfying relationship.

Your Intensive Relationship Coaching will consist of 5 face-face clinical hours with Amanda per day. The days will be broken down into 3-4 sessions of between 90-120 minutes. Due to the intensity of this process, there will be regular breaks throughout the day.

Whilst Intensive Sessions will vary from couple to couple, depending on the extent of their issues, some of the areas you can expect to cover in your Intensive Sessions include:

  • Conflict Management-

  • Strengthening Friendship

  • Deepening Intimacy

  • Building Relationship Resilience

  • Building and Maintaining Connections

  • Creating Shared Meaning

  • Enhancing Passion and Romance

*A sample outline of an Intensive Session has been included at the end of this information package. Please note, your treatment may differ from this sample outline, depending upon the individual needs identified in your relationship during the pre-assessment and treatment planning process. All Intensive Sessions will be individually tailored.

  • Complete and return relationship assessment

  • Complete and return individual assessment

  • Complete online Relationship Check Up

Amanda will conduct a thorough review of your responses to these assessments and this will ensure that she has an in-depth understanding of you and your specific relationship issues prior to the commencement of your intensive.

Whilst completing these assessments may feel overwhelming, the more information you are able to provide Amanda, the more she will be able to tailor a treatment plan for you and your partner that addresses the specific issues within your relationship.

Note: Once you and your partner have decided to undertake Intensive, it is important that you call a ‘cease fire’ on all ‘hot topics’; those ones that are causing any significant distress in your relationship.

Rebuilding and improving your relationship must begin at your initial commitment to start the intensive. In effect, this means putting these ‘hot topics’ on hold, or shelving them, with the knowledge that we will more effectively address these issues in your Intensive. In the meantime, until you visit these conflicts again, we encourage you to begin focusing on what you want out of your relationship moving forward – after we have more effectively dealt with those ‘hot topics’.

Couples that would benefit from an intensive:

  • Couples who want to lay the best possible foundation for their relationship going forward.

  • Couples who are experiencing significant
    relationship distress

  • Couples who want a condensed and highly focused intensive approach to specific issues.

  • Couples who want to jump-start longer term couples therapy by commencing with a high intensity assessment, treatment planning and conflict de-escalation and relationship stabilization.

Couples that the intensive is not suited for:

  • Those with severe relationship distress

  • Those with significant emotional or physical abuse

  • Those with addictions to drugs, alcohol or gambling

  • Those with serious mental health problems

  • Those with an undisclosed or ongoing affair

  • If either partner is currently experiencing suicidal, homicidal or serious self-harming thoughts.

If you are unsure if you should attend, contact us and we'll help you to assess if this workshop is for worries at all!

Couple Showing Affection

Amanda has been married for 11 years and together with her husband, Owen for 16 years.  A Sexologist, Clinical Counsellor, Vice-President of Marriage and Relationship Educators of Australia and Director of her private practice.  Amanda is a night owl and her husband loves his sleep and when you need  plans adjusted...Amanda is quite flexible whereas her husband likes a bit of a plan before he commits.  Amanda fully practices what she preaches...and is thankful that her husband doesn't mind being the guinea pig...for a LOT of different relationship activities.

They are still in love with each other, they disagree and yes, life sometimes gets in the way but, they are committed to their marriage and Amanda is so passionate about relationships that she wants to help any and all couples learn how to create and develop the most fulfilling relationships.

With more than 17 years of clinical and academic experience, Amanda has completed Levels 1, 2 & 3 Practicum Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and she is the state trainer in the Prepare-Enrich program for Australia.  Amanda uses both methods in her work with clients (and even in her own relationship).

Will we have to share our personal problems and issues with the class?
No. The class does not include sharing problems and issues publicly. Couple's exercises are done privately.

Must both partners attend or can I come alone?

Since the class involves doing exercises together, both partners must participate.

My partner isn't a reader. Can we still come to the class if he/she won't read the book?
Yes, still come to class. While the book provides valuable information, the class lectures will summarise the content of the book. Each person will need the companion workbook however, to do the couple's exercises efficiently.

Should we do the exercises in the book at home or save them for the class?
The class will involve doing some of the exercises from the book so doing them first at home would duplicate some of them. In some cases, the directions for doing the exercises in class have been reviewed and updated from those presented in The Seven Principles book. The Educators also role play how to, and how not to do some of the exercises in order to help participants get the most of each exercise. There are some exercises in the book that the class will not have time to do, and couples are encouraged to do them at home after that chapter has been covered in class.

Where is the workshop held?
We are currently only running the Couple Intensive workshop at the office in South Perth, Western Australia.  If you would like for Amanda to fly to your location due to being remote, or an inability to come to Amanda, please contact Amanda directly to discuss.
